Playtime In Park Slope: Upcoming Children’s Events
Looking for something fun to do with the whole family this week? Get up close and personal with some carnivorous plants, meet the walrus mascot from the New York Aquarium, take a spin on a carousel for free, and hang out with a T-Rex! Details on those and more upcoming kid-friendly events:
Story Play
When: Wednesday, August 13, 1:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Bring the family out to the library on Wednesday afternoon for stories, games, and fun with friends. Geared toward children ages birth to 3 years.
How much: Free, but tickets are required for entry (one per family), so be sure to arrive early to score your ticket.
Free Carousel Rides
When: Every Thursday in August, 12-6pm
Where: Prospect Park
What: Who doesn’t love a ride on the Prospect Park Carousel?! Every Thursday afternoon throughout the month of August, kids 12 and under are invited to hop on for free. Note that children must be accompanied by an adult.
How much: Free!
Sea Life Storytime
When: Thursday, August 14, 1:30pm
Where: Central Library, Youth Wing, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Hear sea life stories with the walrus mascot for the New York Aquarium! Play the aquarium guessing game and win special surprises, and take your photo with the walrus (just bring your own camera). For ages 3-8, and no groups will be admitted.
How much: Free!
Carnivorous Plants
When: Thursday, August 14, 3pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Feed me, Seymour! Kids ages 6 and up will have an opportunity to get to know some of the carnivorous plants that eat bugs on Thursday at the Park Slope Library. Jonathan from Midtown Carnivores will present various plants to the audience, and afterward, kids will have an opportunity to plant their very own carnivorous seeds. Note that space is limited and tickets are required, so arrive early to score your spot.

Summer Science Club
When: Friday, August 15, 2:30-3:30pm
Where: Central Library, Youth Wing, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Got a budding biologist or a future physicist? The Summer Science Club series gives kids a chance to explore some interesting stuff — this week, they’ll examine light and colors.

Summer Strolls
When: Friday, August 15, 5-9pm
Where: 5th Avenue between Dean and Sterling
What: Lots of family-friendly fun to be had along 5th Avenue during this big neighborhood block party on Friday evening! Check out games, play in an open fire hydrant, and even enjoy a free performance of Romeo & Juliet with your older kids.

Greenmarket Storytime
When: Saturday, August 16, 10am-12pm
Where: Under the cherry tree next to the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket
What: Enjoy stories and activities with your fruits and veggies after you’ve done a little shopping. Bring a blanket or chair to sit on.

Free Public Rowing
When: Saturday, August 16, 12-4pm
Where: Boat ramp on Well House Drive, Prospect Park
What: Take the kids for a boat ride around the Prospect Park Lake! The Prospect Park Alliance and the Village Community Boathouse are teaming up to make rowing accessible to all on select dates this summer, so paddle on over.

PBS Dinosaur Train’s “Classic In The Jurassic”
When: Sunday, August 17, 10am-12pm
Where: Lakeside, Prospect Park
What: Calling all dinosaur fans! This PBS TV show will be celebrating a new special, which you can see a preview of here, but there will also be meet and greets with Buddy the T-Rex, hands on activities, playtime with Dinosaur Train iPad apps and games. Plus, PBS Kids Club members also receive free skating admission to Lakeside (skate rentals are $6), plus there are more options for fun with a “supersize” purchase — see details here.
