Playtime In Kensington & Windsor Terrace: Upcoming Children’s Events

Looking for something to do with the whole family this week? From a free movie at the Windsor Terrace Library to fishing and roller skating in Prospect Park, there are a lot of great kid-friendly events coming up in our area. See the full details below!

Sing-Along With Debbie Deane
When: Wednesday, July 8, 11am
Where: Lark Cafe, 1007 Church Avenue
What: Belt out some family favorites with local mom and recording artist Debbie Deane.
How much: $5 per family

Watch Free Screening Of ‘Annie’
When: Wednesday, July 8, 1:30-3:30pm
Where: Windsor Terrace Library, 160 E. 5th Street, by Fort Hamilton Parkway
What: Bring your kids to a free showing of “Annie,” one of a series of films the library will be showing throughout July.
How much: Free!

Kids Yoga With Yoga Jen
When: Wednesday, July 8, 3:30pm
Where: Elk Coffee, 154 Prospect Park Southwest
What: Come dance, play and move into animal poses during this 40 minutes long class with your little one (ages 2-5). Space is limited, and it’s first-come, first-served. Contact instructor Jen Pinna at gamm57@aol.com for more information.

Kids Create: Kids Knit Now!
When: Wednesday, July 8, 4-5pm
Where: Kensington Library, 4207 18th Avenue
What: Kids can learn how to knit & make cool gifts for themselves, friends and family. The class size is limited; please pick up a ticket at the children’s reference desk.

Jam With The Dad Beats
When: Thursday, July 9, 11am
Where: Lark Cafe, 1007 Church Avenue
What: Made up of three real-live Brooklyn dads (and neighbors), The Dad Beats traverse surf, rock and country grooves to deliver playful reimaginings of your childhood favorites.
How much: $10 per family

Nature Exploration
When: Thursdays & Fridays, 12-4pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Families can enjoy a variety of activities, from games for bird nerds to Citizen Science projects to a chance to meet a resident snake.
How much: Free!

Sing-Along With Lucy Kalantari
When: Thursday, July 9, 4pm
Where: ELK Coffee, 154 Prospect Park Southwest
What: Join neighbor Lucy Kalantari as she sings and plays the ukulele! This is a wonderful event for kids and caregivers alike.
How much: $5 per family

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, July 10, 7:30-10pm
Where: LeFrak Center at Lakeside in Prospect Park
What: Get out your best 80s gear for neighbor Lola Star’s “Hungry Like A Wolf” roller skating party, which will include dazzling performers, kitschy contests, giveaways, and, of course, a whole lot of Duran Duran.
How much: $18 per person, which includes event admission and skate rentals (buy tickets here).

Lavender Blues Sing-Along
When: Saturday, July 11, 9:30 & 10:30
Where: Lark Cafe, 1007 Church Avenue
What: Bring your babies and toddlers to the Lavender Blues sing-along, when the kids will have a blast singing, playing instruments, dancing, and playing with a ginormous parachute!

Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Much like on the weekdays, families can enjoy a variety of activities, including bird watching, nature-based projects, and more.

Pop-Up Audubon: Macy’s Fishing Clinics
When: Saturdays & Sundays, 12-6pm
Where: Peninsula, Prospect Park
What: This month, from 1-4pm kids under the age of 15 can learn to fish. From 4:30-6pm, learn how to use binoculars and go bird watching.
How much: Free!

Pop-Up Audubon II: Fishing Fun
When: Saturdays & Sundays, 12-6pm
Where: North End of Esplanade, Prospect Park
What: This month, from 1-4pm kids under the age of 15 can learn to fish. From 4:30-6pm, learn how to use binoculars and go bird watching.
How much: Free!

Free Public Rowing
When: Saturday, July 11, 12-4pm
Where: Prospect Park’s Wellhouse Boat Ramp
What: Check out Prospect Park Lake by rowboat, thanks to the Prospect Park Alliance and Village Community Boathouse — which have again teamed up to offer the free public rowing every saturday.
How much: Free!

Fun On The Farm
When: Saturday, July 11, 2-5pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Visitors of all ages can come help the Lefferts staff take care of the potato plot, herb gardens, and berry patches by pulling weeds and helping to water. Bring a hat and a bottle of water and we will provide the tools and gloves.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Free Outdoor Screening Of ‘Back To The Future’
When: Saturday, July 11, 6:30pm
Where: Cortelyou Road & E. 17th Street
What: The Flatbush Development Corporation is sponsoring a showing of “Back To The Future” at 8:30pm, and there will be a free bounce house and other activities beginning at 6:30pm.
How much: Free!

Family Bird Watching
When: Sunday, July 12, 10am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Looking for a fun way to spend time with your family outdoors? Join the Alliance for its monthly family bird watching tours. After learning how to use binoculars, join our naturalists to identify some of the 250 species of birds that call Prospect Park home.
How much: Free!

Hip Tot @ Lakeside
When: Sunday, July 12, 11am-2pm
Where: LeFrak Center, Prospect Park
What: Families will enjoy the original, interactive songs of Brooklyn’s own Mil’s Trills, a children’s music project led by Amelia Robinson, that invites families to celebrate the community through original interactive tunes and a rotating cast of musical guests.
How much: Free!

Toddler Tuesdays
When: Tuesday, July 14, 9:30am
Where: LeFrak Center at Lakeside, Prospect Park
What: Enjoy some toddler-only dedicated skate time on the rink, as kids ages 2-5 and their caregivers will skate to instructor-led games, music, play-based activities — plus there are snacks and beverages.
How much: $15 for one child and accompanying adult; adult skate rentals are $5 (kid skate and helmet rentals are included). Tickets available in advance.

Sing-Along With Amy Miles
When: Tuesday, July 14, 10am
Where: ELK Coffee, 154 Prospect Park Southwest
What: Join Amy Miles — who you may have seen on PBS’ “Lomax the Hound of Music” or Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls — for fun renditions (there are puppets and bubbles!) of well-known songs on guitar, ukulele and more.
How much: $8 per family

Sing-Along With Miss Katie
When: Tuesday, July 14, 11am
Where: Lark Cafe, 1007 Church Avenue
What: Singing a mix of classic kid favorites and rare folk gems, Miss Katie is known for bringing the sing-along fun to Brooklyn families! As one parent put it, “Miss Katie knows how to connect with caregivers, parents and children to bring out the rhythm in all of us.”
