Photos: Jay, Lloyd And Marty – The 18th Anniversary Of A Sheepshead Deli
Jay Stern and Lloyd Lederman were in high spirits yesterday, as throngs of people packed into the 2718 Avenue U storefront to celebrate the kosher-style deli’s 18th anniversary. Not to miss a food celebration, Borough President Marty Markowitz stopped by to issue a proclamation honoring the Brooklyn deli. Sure, he was accompanied by representatives from Congressman Anthony Weiner, Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein and Councilman Michael Nelson – all with their own certificates and proclamations – but the real draw were the $1 hot dogs being sold by the front of the shop.
Markowitz & Co. palled around for the better part of an hour, while the beaming owners of Jay and Lloyd’s Kosher Deli bounced about, shaking hands and cracking wise. The only hitch of the day was the unforgivable sin committed by the beep, when he dropped the first hot dog handed to him.
Even seniors from the Crown Nursing & Rehab Center made an outing, perching themselves in front of the establishment to enjoy the nice weather with their processed meats.
Our only wish? Congressman Weiner himself should’ve stopped by. The opportunity for more of Weiner’s weiner jokes was just too good.
Sheepshead Bites wishes the establishment a happy anniversary, and hopes to see many more.
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz’s proclamation on the 18th Anniversary of Jay and Lloyd’s Kosher Deli:
Whereas, Brooklyn is proud home to everyone from everywhere, a borough that is lauded for the rich tapestry of cultural and ethnic diversity that brings the unique traditions around the globe to our doorstep, and everyone, from the comfort food seeker to the most finicky foodie, is bound to encounter everything that will wow his or her palate, it is most fitting that we recognize those wonderful purveyors of delectables, whose excellent taste and hard work have helped create the unique and fanciful flavor for which Brooklyn is widely known; and
Whereas, all of Brooklyn joins with owners Jay Stern and Lloyd Lederman, the incredible staff and loyal customers that have gathered to partake in the 18th Anniversary of Jay and Lloyd’s Deli, an institution in Sheepshead Bay with the food and ambiance their customers love, from overstuffed pastrami sandwiches to melt in your mouth zucchini pancakes that have been touted for their excellence by The New York Times; and
Whereas, on behalf of all Brooklynites, I salute Jay and Lloyd, friends since childhood who did everything together so it was only natural that Lloyd, coming from a third generation deli family, would partner with his best friend with them becoming true connoisseurs of corn beef, knishes, and their celebrated pastrami, among many other delicacies, I commend them and their amazing staff for continuing to uphold the class, style and tradition that has made Jay and Lloyd’s Deli a “must see” attraction to visitors and residents alike, I congratulate them as they celebrate 18 years of fulfilling the ultimate gastronomic experience to everyone who crosses the threshold, for being living examples of real customer service–so good in fact that both Jay and Lloyd met their wives –Dale and Pamela–who were one-time customers– and I thank Jay and Lloyd and their wonderful staff for continuing the great culinary tradition that has sustained Jay and Lloyd’s Deli for 18 years, and I wish them continued success as one of Brooklyn’s premiere delicatessens, and for securing Brooklyn’s place on the map as the greatest borough to live, work, raise a family and eat the best pastrami anywhere;
Now, therefore, I, Marty Markowitz, President of the Borough of Brooklyn, do hereby proclaim Monday, April 11, 2011, Jay and Lloyd’s Deli 18th Anniversary Celebration Day
in Brooklyn, USA.
