Photo Of The Day: Horseshoes Gettin’ Busy

May to June is a rare time when you can observe swarms of horseshoe crabs in the shallow waters of Calvert Vaux Park‘s protected salt marsh — where they come to breed.

During breeding season, a male crab chooses a female and clings onto to her back. The female digs a hole in the sand and lays her eggs while the male fertilizes them. We snuck a few photos of the frisky crustaceans over the weekend.
