Pet Spotlight: Sammy the Poovanese
We met up with Samuel Buttons Schultz (Sammy, for short) and his owner Susan Schultz on a crisp fall afternoon in Fort Greene Park. Schultz and the 1-year-old pup were out for a walk through the park, enjoying the fall air. Sammy is new to the neighborhood, but Schultz said he has taken to it quickly.
“He’s loving it and loving his house,” Schultz said. “I think he was a stray in Bridgeport, briefly. He was discovered by the Angel Capone rescue team.”
Schultz and her family had been looking for a pet for a while, when she found Sammy’s photo on Angel Capone Pitbull Rescue’s website. Her 10-year-old son had wanted a dog for a few years. When Schultz found Sammy, she jumped on him right away. She was the first to respond to Angel Capone for adoption and her family soon after welcomed the poovanese into their home.
“He’s very mellow and mild and sweet,” she said. “He’s very trusting and cuddly, too. He’s a really lovely companion.”
It was easy to see Sammy’s charm. He looks like a cross between a teddy bear and a tiny cow with his mottled black-and-white coat. Despite all the heavy traffic inside Fort Greene Park on a Sunday afternoon, he seemed relaxed and at ease. Sammy was a bit camera-shy at first, but he quickly warmed up to being in the spotlight. If you see this little guy on one of his walks around the nabe, make sure to give him a warm welcome to Fort Greene.
