Come out this weekend for one of our neighborhood’s most adorable religious ceremonies of the year.

Pet-owners, young and old, are invited to get their furry friends blessed on the front lawn of New Utrecht Reformed Church (1827 84th Street) on Saturday, September 19, with Guest Pastor E.J. Emerson. The event, which will also feature a baked goods and jewelry sale, will run from 2pm – 4pm.

Held in remembrance of Saint Francis of Assisi, who was known for his love for all living creatures, the Blessing of Pets is a special ceremony dedicated to animals. Like Francis of Assisi and many others, Pastor EJ takes particular delight in animals of all kinds, believing they are God’s special gift to people.

“Our pets bless us with unqualified love and faithfulness,” said Emerson. “This is our opportunity to thank God for the joy they give us, even as we invite a special blessing for them.”

Pets of all shapes and sizes are welcome, as long as they can be trusted to be polite in public, and are adequately restrained for their own safety and that of others.  Human companions are asked to be prepared to clean up any droppings their pets may deposit on the property.

The blessing is free to all; the proceeds of the baked goods and jewelry sale will go to the restoration fund for the church’s sanctuary, which was built in 1828-1829.

The New Utrecht Reformed Church is located on 18th Avenue, between 83rd and 84th Streets.  Spread the word!
