Percy’s Replaces South Brooklyn Pizza, Brings $1 Slice
There’s a new awning and a new price list, but not much else has changed at 447 1st Street, just off 7th Avenue. Percy’s Pizza has replaced South Brooklyn Pizza, which re-opened briefly after being closed in August by City Marshals — and it’s not the first time this same name change has taken place.
Both businesses are run by the same owner, Jim McGown, who replaced one of his South Brooklyn Pizza outposts, in Greenwich Village, with a Percy’s Pizza in 2011. Faced with low traffic from nearby NYU students for the $4 slices, he made the switch to ones that cost only a dollar by finding affordable, but still good, ingredient substitutes. In a similar situation in Park Slope, sitting directly across from PS 321 and within blocks of other less expensive pizzerias, moving in that same direction only makes sense.
So is the $1 piece of pizza as good as Slice and the Post have said the Manhattan outpost’s is? Totally. The crust is very similar, if not exactly the same as far as we can remember, to the South Brooklyn version, and the sauce and cheese taste good, so they’ve got that up on pretty much all other dollar slices in the city.
It’s not the same pizza you could get here a few months ago, but if you’re in need of a bite after picking up the kids from school or on your way home from a bar, this will really hit the spot — and boy is the price right.
