Pennsylvania Dutch Farm Coop Looking For Local Volunteers

Want to bring farm-to-table dining to your house?

You may soon be able to by simply providing some storage space and a pickup point for local members of the Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative, a non-profit organic farmer’s co-op located in Pennsylvania.

They’re currently seeking volunteers in Bensonhurst for their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, which will take place this summer. They currently have two other sites in Brooklyn – one in Greenpoint and one in Carroll Gardens.

According to Evan Elizabeth Miller, the co-op’s manager, volunteers need access to either an indoor space or covered outdoor space like a garage, porch or portico where produce can be well sheltered from rain and sunshine.

“At some of our sites, everything is under a tent, so there are a variety of scenarios possible,” Miller told Bensonhurst Bean. “Members need to be able to pick-up their shares each week between mid-May and the end of October. The pick-up window for share members needs to be four hours minimum, preferably late afternoon through early evening. ”

Each site would need around thirty members, which they say they will help volunteers find.

“Each site has to drum up, with lots of help from us, 30 full share members to get a new site started,” Miller wrote in an e-mail to Bensonhurst Bean. “In return, the site host earns a free vegetable share ($725.00 value) of top quality organic food. Some of our other sites choose to divide the share between volunteers, others choose to donate to a local food pantry or mission.”

Lancaster Farm Fresh is made up of a group of 75 Amish organic farmers from Lancaster County, PA.
