Parkside Farmers Market Opens Today, Flatbush Youthmarket Starts Saturday

Good news for all of us fresh produce lovers – a farmers market in front of the Q at Parkside opens today at 1pm, and the Flatbush Junction Youthmarket kicks off on Saturday at 10am.

Today’s opening of the Parkside market follows a big push from the neighborhood, including numerous people signing a petition in December to bring the market to the plaza in front of the Q. The Q at Parkside notes that, “with very little outside financial support, local do-gooder Seeds in the Middle has worked with us to open a market on Friday afternoons (1-6pm) and at the plaza at Empire/Flatbush/Ocean on Saturdays.”

The Parkside market will include a variety of delicious things from RH Farms (which has a mouthwatering Facebook feed filled with peaches, cherries, strawberries, cucumbers, and more). On Saturday, July 12, after a successful trial run last year, the Flatbush Junction Youthmarket (1545 Flatbush Avenue) will begin its second second. Now one of the five youthmarkets in Brooklyn (there’s also one in Kensington), the Flatbush event provides fresh fruits and vegetables grown by a long list of regional farmers. The market will offer a vast array of organic fruits and vegetables, artisan breads, pastries,  dairy and cheddar cheese, beef, pickles, eggs, and more. Additional days may be added, but the market will currently be open on July 12 and 26, and August 9 and 23.

And, for all of you closer to Cortelyou, there’s also good news in the greenmarket department: healthbucks are back! from July to November, shoppers using EBT/food stamps can get an extra $2 coupon for every $5 spent at the Cortelyou farmers’ market, which begins at 8am every Sunday. These healthbuck coupons are good until Nov. 15 for any fresh produce at any greenmarket.
