Do your neighbors’ political views surprise you?

An interesting new dataset has just been released by Renthop, which looks at contributions to presidential candidates — by zip code — across the New York City metro area. Data shows that residents in the 11215 zip code lean heavily towards Hillary Clinton.

Renthop says it took the data from the most recent — as of February 20, 2016 — Federal Election Commission (FEC) campaign disclosure filings. There were just over 1.17 million documented contributions, totaling nearly $300 million for all the candidates’ campaigns, they report.

Check the data out for yourself but here’s what we’ve noticed in our area:

Democratic nomination data: Slightly more than 71% of the donors in zip code 11215 gave money to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign; while over 20% percent donated to Bernie Sanders.

Republican nomination data: Ted Cruz received 3.1% of the donors, Marco Rubio received .6%, John Kasich received .3%, and Donald Trump data is too small to register any percentage. Former candidates combined received 4.8% of the contributions.

A total of $208,735.63 was collected from 362 unique donors in the zip code.

Data for the 11217 zip code can be found in a similar article by our sister site Fort Greene Focus.

So do the numbers reflect how the candidates will perform at the voting box? I suppose we’ll have to wait for the New York primary on April 19.
