Park Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: September 24-27
The fall is getting closer! If you’re hanging around the Slope this weekend and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from traditional Japanese music, chile peppers, as well as theater in a garden. Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:
Gregory Uhlmann Septet & Andy Clausen’s SHUTTER
When: Thursday, September 24, 7:00pm
Where: ShapeShifter Lab, 18 Whitwell Place (between 1st and Carroll Streets)
What: Gregory Uhlmann is a Los Angeles-based guitarist and composer. His music has been described as “lush, (with) deeply affecting melodies that linger in the ear and even longer in the imagination” (Poetry Foundation). In this performance Uhlmann brings together a septet of NY-based musicians to play a set of old and new original music that straddles between American folk music, chamber music, and a vast variety of American improvisational inspirations. Formed in 2012 by Andy Clausen, SHUTTER is a chamber ensemble dedicated to multi-media installations that combine composition, improvisation and photography.An interactive web platform for the project is currently in development and will be released in conjunction with SHUTTER’s debut recording in late 2015.

16th Annual Park Slope Bluegrass Old-Time Jamboree
When: Friday, September 25 from 8-10pm and Saturday September 26 from 12:30-10:00pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West (at 2nd Street)
What: See James Reams and The Barnstormers on Friday, September 25. Participate in and enjoy all day concerts and workshop son Saturday September 26.
How much: On Friday, September 25, $10 for adults and $6 for kids. On Saturday, September 26 tickets are $5 all day. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
23rd Annual Chile Pepper Festival
When: Saturday September 26 from 11:00am-6:00pm
Where: Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 990 Washington Avenue
What: The festival celebrates the fiery fruit of the Capsicum plant with a full day of red-hot music, spicy edibles to sample, garden tours, and more. There will be food artisans, fire breathers, chocolate debauchery, and more spicy culture.
How much: Adults, $20, Seniors (65 and over), $15, Students 12+ with valid ID, $15, Children under 12, Free. You may purchase at the door or buy advanced tickets.
Between Sound and Silence, a concert of Zen Buddhist Music for the Shakuhachi, Japanese Bamboo Flute
When: Saturday, September 26 at 7:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Zen Center (505 Carroll Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues)
What: ]ames Nyoraku Schlefer and his students perform with the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute. See the preview article for the event.
How much: $15 suggested donation.
Communal Spaces: a garden play festival
When: Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27, 5pm
Where: Warren/St. Marks Community Garden, 619 Warren Street between 4th and 5th Avenues
What: This festival of performing theater in gardens is presented by The Motor Company. Each performance will feature two plays: An Apple Today, written by Charly E. Simpson and directed by Megan Weaver, as well as enter a garden, written by Dominic Finocchiaro and directed by Lillian Meredith.
How much: Free
End of Summer Crab Boil
When: Sunday, September 27, 11am-8pm
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues
What: Join Threes Brewing for a garden for crabs, beer and the last rays of the September sun! There will be three seatings at 1:00pm, 3:00pm, and 5:00pm, and live Honky Tonk from 5:00-8:00pm in the main bar. Seating will be first-come, first-served, and they have lots of tables for groups of 4 – 10 people. After your two-hour seating you to join them at the outside or inside bar for further treats! The event will go ahead rain or shine, (under tents in rain), so dress for the weather. Kids are welcome at the earlier seatings, but note that their clam shell yard is not great for pushing strollers (leave these at the front).
How much: A $35 ticket includes a bucket of crabs, a pint of Threes beer, tax, and service. Tickets can be purchased here.
Smorgasburg
When: Sunday, September 27, 11am-4pm
Where: Breeze Hill, Prospect Park
What: Even if you’re lighting up those barbecues for Labor Day weekend, be sure to leave room for the gastronomical delights waiting for you at the Prospect Park Smorgasburg. With 100 vendors featuring prepared and packaged cuisines from all over the world, you’ll definitely want to check it out.
