Park Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: November 5-8
And you thought there were a lot of events last weekend during Halloween? We have sexy talk and cocktails, an open studio tour, some “comedic dicking around,” and Pete Sinjin’s new album played live! Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:
Book Launch: Sunlight on the River by Scott Gutterman
When: Thursday, November 5, 7:00pm
Where: Community Bookstore, 143 7th Avenue (between Carroll Street and Garfield Place)
What: Scott Gutterman delves deeply into the connections between the written and the visual in the rich, new compendium, Sunlight on the River: Poems about Paintings and Paintings about Poems. From a sonnet by Rossetti inspired by Botticelli to William Carlos Williams’s celebrated interpretations of Breughel, Gutterman’s art book demonstrates the ability of artists and poets to penetrate to the essence of their subjects.

Books In Babeland: “I Loved My Cellmate” And Other Tales Of Love And Desire

Friends Of Park Slope Library Preview Book Sale
When: Thursday, November 5, 5-7pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue (at 9th Street)
What: The early bird catches the worm this Thursday, when Friends of Park Slope Library open their book sale doors for a Thursday sneak peek. A $10 admission will give attendees first dibs on a huge selection of used books. All proceeds benefit Park Slope Library.
How much: $10 Admission
Dance Party: Salsa Social with Aguanile Na’ Ma’
When: Friday, November 6, 7:00pm
Where: Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, 58 7th Avenue (at Lincoln Place)
What: Celebrate Hispanic heritage at our Salsa Social with live music provided by the Latin band Aguanile Na’ Ma’ and dance instruction by Tito Sandoval. This event is part of the BKCM Cultural Concert Series.

The Ivy Collective: A Work in Progress Performance by Carbon Mirage, Bryce Dance Company, and the Human Canvas
When: Friday, November 6, 7:00pm
Where: ShapeShifter Lab, 18 Whitwell Place (between 1st and Carroll Streets)
What: Diverge: An informal performance and conversation with the artists. In collaboration with Carbon Mirage (NYC) and The Human Canvas (VT)
How much: $10 at the door.
Park Slope/Windsor Terrace Open Studio Tour
When: Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, 12-6pm
Where: Various locations. See map for details.
What: Meet your artistic neighbors in this weekend’s open studio tour, see their work, ask them questions, and maybe even find a piece to add to your collection. The event is free, and all studios are within walking distance of each other.
How Much: Free.
5K Run/Walk for CHiPs
When: Saturday, November 7, 9:00am
Where: Prospect Park, beginning at 14th Street/Prospect Park West entrance.
What: Come to Prospect Park to raise awareness & support for CHiPS. $22.50 from each registration is donated to CHiPS. Last year, together with runners and participating local businesses, we raised over $12k for CHiPS! More information can be found at the CHiPS website.

Friends of The Park Slope Library Book Sale
When: Saturday, November 7, 11:00am-4:00pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: It’s that time of year again when the Friends of the Park Slope Library team up with librarians and staff to bring you our blockbusting, price-chopping, mega book sale extravaganza! We have received tons of donations this year and will be offering a wide array of adult fiction, children’s books, non-fiction, and books written in every conceivable genre and on every imaginable subject all at discount prices. You don’t want to miss this massive and massively important sale. All sales go straight to the Park Slope Library and are vital in allowing us to offer you, the public, top notch programs and events.

House of Wax: Anatomical, Pathological, and Ethnographic Waxworks from Castan’s Panopticum, Berlin, 1869-1922
When: Saturday, November and Sunday, November 8, 12-6pm.
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue at 7th Street.
What: House of Wax will exhibit a selection of waxworks once shown as part of Castan’s Berlin-based Panopticum (1869-1922). The full collection, never before exhibited in the US, will later be installed at the forthcoming Alamo Drafthouse in Downtown Brooklyn.
How much: Regular admission fees: Admission to the exhibition & library is $5. Seniors and students are $3, and children 12 and under are free.
Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, November and Sunday, November 8, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Smorgasburg has moved down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City is housing both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to our doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).
Sunday Colloquy: Exploring Authority With Jone Johnson Lewis
When: Sunday, November 8, 11am-12:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West at 2nd Street
What: Have you ever felt like you weren’t trusted enough to exercise authority? Have you ever felt like you didn’t trust those who had authority? In this colloquy, we’ll explore the complicated relationship most of us have with the concept and practice of “authority.” Come be a part of the exploration.

Pete Sinjin’s House of Song
When: Sunday, November 8, 11am
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street at 2nd Avenue
What: Pete Sinjin will be celebrating his new family album, House of Song, with a full band performance and party. “Hootenanny Pete” is a beloved Brooklyn treasure, especially to the littlest Brooklynites and their parents. He and his wife Kira opened the Hootenanny Art House in 2007, instilling a love for music in thousands of children in the community. Hootenanny was profiled in South Slope News earlier this year.

Dicking Around with Kyle Ayers
When: Sunday, November 8, 7:30pm (Doors) and 8:o0 (Show)
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street, at 5th Avenue
What: Host Kyle Ayers invites some of his favorite comedians and other types of people to perform stand up, and generally dick around on stage. Comedy sets accompanied by a few bizarre concept comedy bits along the lines of: the Boast Rattle (a roast-style compliment competition), Historic Events Retold by YouTube’s Closed Caption Robot, Pop-Up Cinema, Non-sexual Craigslist Encounters, Rejected Google Doodles, Children’s Books Rewritten by Famous Authors, and more! Things you’ve never seen before in a place that sells alcohol! With John Early, Jo Firestone, Aparna Nancherla, and Pete Lee.
