Park Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: July 16-19
There are plenty of fun things to do in Park Slope this weekend! Demon barbers, swing dancing in Grand Army Plaza, the Devil’s Masquerade party, lots of music, and more. There’s something for everyone this weekend in Park Slope.

Plaza Swing Series: Sonido Costeno
When: Thursday, July 16, 6:30pm
Where: Central Library, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Dance lessons are at 6:30pm and the music starts at 7pm. Sonido performs a high-energy mix of Cuban son, guaracha, Dominican merengue and bachata and Jamaican reggae.So come dance at the library.

Celebrate Brooklyn!: Vieux Farka Touré
When: Thursday, July 16, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: We’re looking at a gorgeous night for this Thursday’s Celebrate Brooklyn! Vieux Farka Touré, the “heir apparent to the African guitar throne,” takes the stage, along with a little desert blues from Tamikrest.

Sweeney Todd
When: Thursday-Saturday, July 16-18, 10pm
Where: Old Stone House, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: Come watch The Demon Barber of Fleet Street under the star at the Old Stone House. Set in 19th century England, Sweeney Todd is an unjustly exiled barber who returns to London with a new name seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him, ravaged his young wife and became warden to his daughter. Todd’s downstairs neighbor, Mrs. Lovett’s luck sharply shifts when Todd helps her integrate an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up to indulge themselves. Concessions with beer, wine, meatpies, sweet treats available from Sweet Pistachio Patisserie.

Kings of Karaoke

What: Get your karaoke on at The Rock Shop tonight. The song book has been bolstered by taking song requests at every party for ten years, constantly building upon a hefty cache of the classics everyone loves. No more uncomfortable dead air between performers! You’ll hear sick indie, metal, punk, 80’s, 90’s, and all other sorts of great music between the performances. So bring out your inner performer.

Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco

Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: If you’re ready to get physical, the only place you need to be this Friday is Lakeside, where Dreamland Roller Disco is all about ’80s workout gear. Note that admission is restricted to guests ages 21 and older. For more information, or to buy tickets in advance, visit the Dreamland website.

Celebrate Brooklyn!: The Son Of The Shiek & Ghost Train Orchestra
When: Friday, July 17, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, Prospect Park West at 9th Street
What: Spend the evening with Rudolf Valentino, as Celebrate Brooklyn! presents his silent film, Son of the Shiek. The night starts off with the lively Ghost Train Orchestra, playing Harlem and Chicago jazz of the ’20s. Afterward, Alloy Orchestra will perform alongside the film with a live score.

Morbid Anatomy First Anniversary Party

Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum,
What: The Morbid Anatomy Museum is celebrating one year with at Festival of Arcane Knowledge and a Devil’s Masquerade Party on Saturday. Stop by during the day to see talks, tours, and demonstrations by the musuem’s community of makers, teachers, and scholars. Or stop by after 8pm for a masquerade party featuring the Devil himself and plenty of delicious cocktails.

Fantasy Sports signing with Sam Bosma
When: Saturday, July 18, 7pm
Where: Bergen Street Comics, 470 Bergen Street
What: Brooklyn’s own Sam Bosma will be at the shop to launch the first book in Nobrow’s Fantasy Sports series. Originally published by Sam as a black and white mini comic, this new version is bigger, longer and in full, glorious color. A rip-snorting adventure/sporting graphic novel about a young girl who ends up in the basketball tournament of her life, this is one of the coolest YA comics this year.

What: Coming off her solo debut, Tomorrow Is My Turn, Rhiannon Giddens is “so hot she’s in danger of melting the Bandshell stage.” How can you miss that? It’s all Americana and soul at Celebrate Brooklyn! Saturday. Don’t miss it.

Jeremiah Lockwood
When: Sunday, July 19, 5pm
Where: Barbés, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: The Sway Machinery leader, Jeremiah Lockwood, got his first musical education singing in the choir of his grandfather, Cantor Jacob Konigsberg and then spent a decade playing in the subways of New York City with Piedmont Blues legend Carolina Slim. In 2010, he traveled to Africa collaborating with Celebrate Brooklyn performer, Vieux Farka Touré. He is in residence all of July with various special guests. This week he performs with Shoko Nagai.
