Park Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: September 14-16
Don’t wait until the weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from unscripted stand-up comedy to a pre-party for the Brooklyn Book Festival to a pub quiz, there’s plenty going on in Park Slope this week. Below are some of our favorite events from around the area.
For even more things to do around Brooklyn, and to add your own upcoming events (some of which we’ll feature in this roundup in the future!), check out our calendar.
Brooklyn Book Festival Bookend Kick-Off Party
When: Monday, September 14, 7pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street
What: The 10th (!) annual Brooklyn Book Festival is about to get underway, and though the events during the fest are the main draw, you won’t want to miss those coming up on either end. Start off the literary celebration with a big dance party that includes free drinks and prizes.
How much: Free!
Joe Russo
When: Monday, September 14, 7:30pm
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street
What: Musician Joe Russo begins a month-long residency in the Little Montgomery space at the brewery — tonight, he plays with Robbie Seahag Mangano for the first set, and with Sam Cohen for the second.
How much: $10 suggested donation.
Truth Be Told: Readings From The Brooklyn Non-Fiction Prize Contest
When: Tuesday, September 15, 7pm
Where: Central Library, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: We love fiction, but there’s something especially compelling about true stories — particularly when they’re told by those who lived them. That’s the scene to expect here, when six finalists from the Brooklyn Non-Fiction Prize competition will share tales of love, danger, remembrance, bravery, and reflections on existence in Brooklyn.
How much: Free!
Set List
When: Tuesday, September 15, 8pm
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street
What: The concept for this stand-up show leads to a ton of laughs: Comics are given spur-of-the-moment topics, and they perform jokes based on the topic as though that’s what they came to do. The lineup includes none other than Elayne Boosler, Mark Normand, Brooke Van Poppelen, Eliza Skinner, Sean Donnelly, plus a special guest.
How much: $10 in advance, $12 day of show.
Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz
When: Wednesday, September 16, 8:30pm
Where: The Rock Shop, 294 4th Avenue
What: Most so-called “trivia nights” consist of either an MP3J reading Trivial Pursuit cards in between bad music, or a bunch of people staring at TVs with buzzers in hand. This quiz burns through nearly 70 multimedia questions in two exciting hours. The quizmaster gets to know the players, and smack talk flying around in all directions is pretty much par for the course.
How much: Free. Although there’s no cover, it’s just good form to buy food and drinks. As the website says, “Just ordering water is NOT cool.”
