Literary Death Match
When: Monday, June 22, 7pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street at 2nd Avenue
What: Four writers read their own work for seven minutes or less, and are then judged by three all-star judges. Two finalists are chosen to compete in the Literary Death Match finale, a vaguely-literary game to decide the ultimate winner.

As You Like It In Prospect Park
When: Tuesday, June 23 – Wednesday, June 24, 7pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: New York Classical Theatre’s The Taming of the Shrew kicks off this Tuesday in Prospect Park. No tickets or reservations are required, but after meeting at Grand Army Plaza, the production will move through the park, so be sure to arrive by 7pm.
How much: Free.

A Desire for Dramaticism: Semiotics of the 1980s Goth Subculture
When: Tuesday, June 23, 8pm
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue at 7th Street
What: Goth’s steadfast dedication to macabre and gloomy aesthetics proved to be a profound devotion of its members, reflecting in their makeup, clothing, accessories, and artwork such as album covers or flyers. This discussion will be a visual journey through the beginnings of goth up to the early 1990s, a dramatic assemblage of the beautiful and the grotesque.

The Fancy Show
When: Tuesday, June 23, 8:30pm
Where: Bar Reis, 375 5th Avenue, between 5th and 6th Streets
What: Brooklyn’s greatest night of free comedy, The Fancy Show, is ready to get your endorphins flowing every Tuesday night. Stop in to enjoy big laughs, cheap beverages, and lots of great chances to mingle before and after the show.The Fancy Show regularly features comedians who’ve appeared on HBO, Comedy Central, NBC, FOX, TBS, SNL, FX and everywhere in between.

How I Learned I’ll Never Do That Again…Most Likely
When: Wednesday, June 24, 7:30pm
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street at 5th Avenue
What: If you like stories and humor and depth and booze, this is going to be the best night of our lives. Stories by Sasheer Zamata, Isaac Fitzgerald, Drew Grant, Dan Wilbur, Brian Kennedy, and Blaise Allysen Kearsley.
How much: $6 advance, $10 day of show.

The Mandingo Ambassadors
When: Wednesday, June 24, 10pm
Where: Barbés, 376 9th Street
What: The Mandingo Ambassadors was founded by griot-guitarist Mamady Kouyaté in 2005.  As a veteran of the great orchestras of the golden age of Guinean dance bands, Mamady is a living library of musical science inherited from his ancestors and from a half century of experience as an arranger, band leader, accompanist and soloist.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.
