Park Slope Weekday Events Spotlight: August 10-12

Don’t wait until the weekend for a little neighborhood fun! With everything from comedy and trivia, to outdoor movies and jazz, folks in the Slope won’t have to go far for summertime entertainment. Below are some of our favorite events from around the area.

Chris Gethard: Career Suicide
When: Monday, August 10, 8:30pm
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street
What: Comedian Chris Gethard performs an hour of standup focusing on suicide, alcoholism, and all the other funniest parts of life. The evening also features Will Miles, a comedian who was voted one of the funniest comedians of 2014 by Brightest Young Things.

Tropical Vortex Mondays
When: Monday, August 10, 9:30pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street at 6th Avenue
What: Every Monday, Barbes showcases bands and DJs who specialize in variations on Tropical sounds. This week, Combo Chimbita, brainchild of musicians Camilo rodriguez and Felipe Quiroz, their sound combines the duel trombone attack of classic NYC Salsa with a rootsy, baass-heavy, laid back organic groove.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation.

Angela Morris & Anna Webber: Music For Big Band
When: Tuesday, August 11, 7:30pm
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street
What: Saxophonist-composers Anna Webber and Angela Morris team up to present an evening of original compositions for big band. 18 musicians will perform two sets of the composers’ respective pieces of jazz/experimental/new music.
How much: $10.

Death Cafe with Louise de Winter
When: Tuesday, August 11, 6pm
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue
What: Death is hard to talk about, but funeral planner Louise de Winter wants to help make it easier. She is hosting a Death Cafe, where you can discuss all matters of death, dying, and life over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. The objective of the Death Cafe is “to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives.” It’s all about having an interesting, unstructured conversation.

Ask Me Another
When: Wednesday, August 12, 6:30pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street at 2nd Avenue
What: Check out a live taping of NPR quiz show, Ask Me Another, hosted by Ophira Eisenberg. For an hour, you can play along as Eisenberg puts questions to a rotating band of puzzle gurus, audience members, and special mystery guests, who then takes a turn in the contestant’s chair facing trivia games written especially for him or her. Tonight’s mystery guest? Uzo Aduba from Orange Is The New Black.

Summer Movie Under The Stars
When: Wednesday, August 12, 7-11pm
Where: Prospect Park, Long Meadow North
What: Nothing says summer like movies in the park! Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams and the Prospect Park Alliance present screenings of family films every Wednesday on Long Meadow. Entertainment begins at 7pm, and the movies will start after sunset. This week we’ve got adorable penguins with some serious moves in Happy Feet.
