Park Slope Planner: The Best Events October 23-26


Whether you’re hoping to enter your dog in a Halloween costume contest, you’re looking to get scared at a book reading, or you think you can win a no-hands cider donut-eating contest, there are a lot of fun events coming up in our area this weekend.

An Evening With The Horror Writers Association
When: Thursday, October 23, 8pm
Where: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 3rd Avenue
What: A night of tales and treats as Horror Writers Association New York and Long Island Chapter authors Tonya Hurley, Marc L. Abbott, Charles Day, neighbor Amy Grech, and more will be on hand to serve up a selection of excerpts from their latest books, along with vintage horror cookies and giveaways.
How much: $8, tickets available in advance.

Migguel Anggelo
When: Thursday, October 23, 8pm
Where: Barbès, 376 9th Street
What: The Brooklyn-based, Venezuelan-born singer and storyteller, makes his debut at Barbès, performing original works from his forthcoming album, La Casa Azul, scheduled for release in January 2015.
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.

Colors NYC
When: Friday, October 24, 10:30pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street
What: A monthly party with no dress code, no standing around, just good, fun and lots of dancing.
How much: RSVP for free admission.

Tango Lessons
When: Saturday, October 25, 10am-12pm
Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Learn the fundamentals of one of a dramatic dance at this fun, informal series from the IATI Theater. Lessons are in English and Spanish, and there are two sessions: 10-11am is for beginners, and 11am-12pm is for advanced dancers.
How much: Free, but space is limited, so arrive early, and bring your library card for admission.

Friends Book Sale
When: Saturday, October 25, 10:30am-4:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: It’s time for the Friends of Park Slope Library book sale. Come out to pick up some new favorites, and help support improvement and enhancements at our local branch.

Apples To Big Apple
When: Saturday, October 25, 10:30am-12:30pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket
What: Help celebrate New York’s favorite fruit: the apple! Hosted in partnership with the Brooklyn Public Library and Food Book Fair, enjoy apple ID activities, a cider-doughnut eating contest (on strings), pumpkin painting, a hard cider making demo, story time, and more.
How much: Free!

Halloween Food Truck Rally
When: Saturday, October 25, 11:30am-4:30pm
Where: Center Drive
What: More than a dozen food truck are back with sweet and savory treats to help feed the folks at this year’s Haunted Walk & Carnival.

Sneak Peek At Threes Brewing
When: Saturday, October 25, 2pm-12am
Where: Threes Brewing, 333 Douglass Street
What: Sycamore’s Flatbush Food Court and sandwich pop-up shop Gaddy Lane are hosting an event at the new Gowanus brewery, where folks can get a sneak peak at the space. They’ll have food from Gaddy Lane from 4-9pm, some of the beer they’ve been working on, and some live bluegrass, too.
How much: Free admission.

Howl-O-Ween Costume Bash For Dogs
When: Sunday, October 26, 2-4pm
Where: Long Meadow in Prospect Park, near the Grand Army Plaza entrance
What: Go Fetch Run and Calm Energy Dog Training will be hosting the second annual event, with awards for the best costumes and prizes.
How much: $10 costume contest registration, which will benefit local animal rescue groups.

Concerts On The Slope: Trio Céleste
When: Sunday, October 26, 3pm
Where: St. John’s Episcopal Church, 139 St Johns Place
What: One of today’s most exciting young ensembles pays a visit all the way from southern California to perform Pierre Jalbert’s Piano Trio, Antonin Dvorak’s “Dumky” Trio, and Beethoven’s grand “Archduke” Trio.
How much: Free will donation.
