Park Slope Planner: The Best Events July 10-13
Looking for something fun to do close to home this weekend? From music and a movie at Celebrate Brooklyn, to a roller disco in the park, to several free outdoor theatrical performances, there’s a ton to do in the neighborhood. Details on those events and more:
Celebrate Brooklyn: Illya Kuryaki & The Valderramas / Choc Quib Town / RVSB
When: Thursday, July 10, 7pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street/Prospect Park West entrance
What: Should be a great night to get down in the park, as these three groups bring all the rhythm you’ll need for dancing. Illya Kuryaki & The Valderramas blend hip-hop, rock, funk, and salsa; Choc Quib Town provide a new fusion of Colombian Afro-Caribbean music and hip-hop; and RSVB is all about Latin electronica.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson
When: Thursday-Saturday, July 10, 11 & 12, 8pm
Where: The Old Stone House, 3rd Street between 4th & 5th Avenues
What: A punk rock musical about our seventh president. This production features profanity and violent themes, so it’s recommended for adults and mature children.
How much: Free!
Joe Pino Organ Trio
When: Thursday, July 10, 9-11pm
Where: Tea Lounge, 837 Union Street
What: Hear Joe Pino, trumpet, teacher/educator, and endorsed Adams Flugelhorn Artist, who started playing trumpet at the age of 10, and who’s performed with many great musicians and bands including The Temptations, The Happenings, Brian Evans, and Jim Rotondi.

2nd Annual Great American Roots Stomp
When: Friday and Saturday, July 11-12, 7:30pm
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues
What: Ready for “two nights of hootin’, hollerin’, jazzin’, swingin’, foot-stompin’, barn-burnin’ revelry with eight NYC bands audaciously bringing Americana roots back into the spotlight?” Then be sure to be there as the Union Street Preservation Society hosts their Great American Roots Stomp. How much: $10 tickets available in advance: Friday, Saturday.
Celebrate Brooklyn: Vote, It Ain’t Illegal Yet!
When: Friday, July 11, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street/Prospect Park West entrance
What: Fort Greene resident Nelson George honors the 50th anniversary of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 with Vote, It Ain’t Legal Yet, an evening of film, music, and spoken word. Gates open at 6:30pm.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Dreamland Roller Disco
When: Friday, July 11, 8-10pm
Where: Lakeside, Prospect Park
What: On Friday nights from 8-10pm through the fall, bust your roller moves to a new theme — the first one is Flashdance – and enjoy dance and costume competitions with prizes donated by local businesses, performances that promise to bring a taste of Coney Island to Prospect Park, and more.
How much: $15 includes skate rental, tickets available in advance.
Seafood Throwdown
When: Saturday, July 12, 11am-1pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket
What: See Cheryl Smith of Cheryl’s Global Soul against Shanna Pacifico of Pacifico’s Fine Foods in the Iron Chef-style battle as they race to transform a secret seafood ingredient into a culinary masterpiece using other seasonal foods from the market.
How much: Free!
Park Slope Dog Dash
When: Saturday, July 12, 1-3pm
Where: The Gate, 321 5th Avenue
What: An awesome family-friendly (and dog-friendly) scavenger hunt around the neighborhood that supports the equally awesome Foster Dogs NYC. Learn about fostering an animal, meet some cute dogs, do challenges on the scavenger hunt, and promote local small businesses!
How much: $30 tickets through July 11, $35 day-of.
Celebrate Brooklyn: Alloy Orchestra: He Who Gets Slapped/Stephanie Wrembel
When: Saturday, July 12, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street/Prospect Park West entrance
What: One of our favorite Celebrate Brooklyn events returns on Sunday, as Alloy Orchestra performs their original score to Lon Chaney’s 1924 silent classic, He Who Gets Slapped. Also watch for a little Gypsy jazz with Stephanie Wrembel, who Rolling Stone calls a “modern day Django Reinhardt.”

Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, July 13, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Got a hankering for a lobster roll and an ice cream sandwich, and enjoying them al fresco in the park? The food trucks are back!
Buffalo Nickels Medicine Show
When: Sundays July 13, 7:30pm
Where: The Old Stone House, 3rd Street between 4th & 5th Avenues
What: A hybrid of bluegrass gig, vaudevillian scripted comedy, and lowbrow pageantry. It sings and picks its way through the on- and off-stage exploits of its itinerant company, as they pine for and plot against each other and the audience that gathers each evening around their traveling wagons. Appropriate for all ages.

Mr. Splitfoot
When: Sunday, July 13, 9pm
Where: The Old Stone House, 3rd Street between 4th & 5th Avenues
What: Mr. Splitfoot is a work of physical theatre inspired by the Fox sisters from upstate NY, who as young girls in the 1850s literally conjured the spiritualist movement into being — a suspenseful tale replete with mystics, hucksters, and fantastic-but-true twists of fate. This production is recommended for adults and mature children.
