Park Slope Planner: The Best Events January 29-February 1
It’s going to get pretty cold over the next couple days, so we’ve rounded up a few events coming up this weekend that should keep you warm — including beers with ballroom dancing, a free cheese tasting, a show by a Dolly Parton tribute band, and a soup cook-off! Details on those and more:
Roger Rosenblatt: The Book Of Love
When: Thursday, January 29, 7pm
Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Get ready for Valentine’s Day with the author of Making Toast and Kayak Morning, whose new book explores love in all its moods and variations.
How much: Free, but guarantee your spot by RSVPing.
Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, January 30, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free!
Brooklyn Beer & Ballroom
When: Friday, January 30, 6:30pm
Where: Dancewave, 182 4th Avenue
What: Get ready to swing at this social get-together. Drinks start at 6:30pm, then a dance lesson runs from 7-8pm — no partner and no prior dance experience is necessary. Plus, all participants will receive happy hour drink and food specials all evening from sponsor Cherry Tree.

Cheese Class
When: Friday, January 30, 7pm
Where: Park Slope Food Coop, 782 Union Street
What: Cara Warren of Greene Grape Provisions will talk about Crown Finish Caves of Crown Heights, who make crazy good cheese. And hell yes, there will be free cheese to eat. But get there early — space is limited to the first 30 people.
How much: Free, and non-members are welcome!
Tango Workshops
When: Saturday, January 31, 10am-12pm
Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Learn the fundamentals of one of a dramatic dance at this fun, informal series from the IATI Theater. Lessons are in English and Spanish, and there are two sessions: 10-11am is for beginners, and 11am-12pm is for advanced dancers.
How much: Free, but space is limited, so arrive early, and bring your library card for admission.
Happy Birthday Dolly Parton With Doll Parts & Friends
When: Saturday, January 31, 8pm
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street

Early Morning Birdwalk: Backyard Birds
When: Sunday, February 1, 10am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Join the Prospect Park Alliance and the Brooklyn Bird Club to learn about the Great Backyard Bird Count, which is coming up on February 15, and search for your favorite “backyard birds” such as woodpeckers, chickadees, and nuthatches.

The Brooklyn Soup Takedown 2015
When: Sunday, February 1, 2pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street
What: Unlimited soup awaits all ticketholders, who also get to vote on their favorites among these bowls served up by local home cooks.

Pinups For Pitbulls Book Signing
When: Sunday, February 1, 2-4pm
Where: Enz’s, 171 5th Avenue
What: Bring your dog — all four-legged friends are welcome — to meet Deirdre Franklin and pick up a signed copy of her most recent book. Plus, everything at the shop will be 20% off.
