Brooklyn Unicycle Day
When: Friday, August 29, 2-10pm
Where: Ride passes through Grand Army Plaza at 4pm
What: A 13-mile ride across the Brooklyn Bridge to Coney Island marks the beginning of the NYC Unicycle Festival. Join the ride (helmets required) or just watch the single-wheel enthusiasts pass through the area.

The 5th Annual Backpack To School Event
When: Friday, August 29, 3:30-6pm
Where: Nicholas Heyward Playground, Wyckoff St between Hoyt and Bond
What: Children of all ages from Gowanus Houses and the surrounding community can receive a new backpack, school supplies, and a free bike helmet from NYCDOT before the beginning of the school year — all children are welcome!

Kings Of Karaoke

What: You’ve got a song in your heart whether you can actually sing or not, and here’s the place to let it out.

What: It’s your last chance to see the violinist for the Hot Rubies and the Luminescent Orchestri, who’s been playing here for the month of August.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Where: Canal Bar, 270 3rd Avenue
What: It’s just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right, with your hands on your hips, you bring your knees in tight — but it’s the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane in this Gowanus bar’s backyard screening of the popular sing-along movie.

The Moth StorySlam
When: Monday, September 1, 8pm
Where: The Bell House, 149 7th Street
What: Whether you’re chosen to tell your 5-minute story or you just get to listen to others, this month’s topic — crime and punishment — should be a pretty compelling one! The winning storyteller of the night gets to move on to a GrandSlam Championship.
