Park Slope Businesses: What Opened & Closed This Month

It’s been a busy few weeks for businesses in the neighborhood, with several new openings, closures, changes in ownership, and spaces moving to new locations. Here’s a look back on what’s happened in over the past month:

NOW OPEN: Buttermilk Bakeshop
260 5th Avenue, between Garfield and Carroll

Chef Katie Rosenhouse has introduced her second area bakery (the first opened a year ago at 339 7th Avenue, near 9th Street), which handles the baking for both locations, offers classes, and has some killer snickerdoodles.

NOW OPEN: Varrio 408
412 5th Avenue, between 7th and 8th Streets

The crew behind Rachel’s Taqueria (408 5th Avenue) has opened this taco joint (which has burritos, mulas, and more as well) where they’re cranking out fresh tortillas in the front. And damn, are those the vehicle for some mighty tasty tacos!

NOW OPEN: Diamond Wireless
153 7th Avenue, between Carroll and Garfield

The Verizon retailer, which launched in Salt Lake City in 2000 and now has hundreds of locations all across the country, opened in the former GameStop space.

NOW OPEN: Latoue Nail Spa II
92 7th Avenue, between Berkeley and Union

One of two new nail salons on this stretch (the other is opening soon directly across the street), this one — the second outpost of a Bay Ridge salon — beat them to the opening punch, and are already doing mani-pedis and more.

NOW OPEN: Urban Wellness
72 7th Avenue, between Lincoln and Berkeley

A new shop offering vitamins, supplements, and other health-conscious products — with smoothies, juices, and even some food to come soon — opened in the space that was most recently home to The Walk-In Cookbook.

NOW OPEN: North Slope Veterinary
207 6th Avenue at Union Street

Dr. Christopher Gaylord, a veterinarian and the practice owner, recently purchased the former 6th Avenue Animal Clinic and opened the new the new space, which features state-of-the-art veterinary software, allowing you to keep up with your pet’s health needs using an online personalized pet portal.

NOW OPEN: Don Chingon
216 Flatbush Avenue, near Bergen

A new spot for tacos, burritos, and other Mexican fare just opened where Fish & Sip closed this past fall, convenient to those looking for a bite close to Barclays.

NOW CLOSED: Prospect Gardens Pharmacy
89 7th Avenue, at Union Street

The pharmacy is now closed after about seven decades in the space, and the new owner of the building reportedly has plans to get a “big national retail tenant” into the storefront next.

NOW CLOSED: Baluchi’s
310 5th Avenue, between 2nd and 3rd Streets

The local outpost of this Indian restaurant mini-chain is kaput, following a few years of DOH closures. The 3,000-square-foot space is currently on the market for $17,000 per month.

CHANGE IN OWNERSHIP: Bonnie’s Grill
278 5th Avenue, between Garfield and 1st

Original owner Mike Nabor, who spent the past 15 years serving up some of the best wings in the city, sold the space, but the name, the staff, and the concept (and those wings) remain the same.

MOVED: Good Footing Adventure
Previously at 196 7th Avenue near 2nd Street
Now at 316 7th Avenue, between 8th and 9th Streets

The shoe shop — which also carries, and sharpens, ice skates, made a move into the former Video Gallery space, where they are now open for business.

NAME CHANGE: Punta Cana
50 5th Avenue, at Bergen Street

The Latin-American coffee shop Marine’s for a bit of an update, changing the name, but not much else — the owners and menu remain the same. It’s now open under the new name.
