Three people were sent to Lutheran Hospital in, thankfully, stable condition after a car crash on Albemarle at East 4th Street overturned an ambulette at about 9:50am today, a spokesman for the FDNY tells us.

A neighbor on the Kensington Facebook group notes that a car may have run a stop sign, which has led to a long conversation on that page about whether this stretch of Albemarle should have a traffic light.

According to the site CrashStat, which maps crash data that involves cars verus cyclists and pedestrians, Albemarle between McDonald and Ocean Parkway is fairly dangerous for pedestrians, compared to local roads that run parallel to it that do have traffic lights. The site shows that on this stretch, two cyclists and nine pedestrians were struck between 1995-2008, including one incident that resulted in a pedestrian’s death at Albemarle and East 3rd in 2004.

You can make a traffic light request online, and the Department of Transportation says they will look at the request within 12 weeks. You can also reach out to Community Board 12 at bkcb12@gmail.com or 718-851-0800 to see if they can help, if you feel that traffic lights would make this stretch safer.
