Open House New York Dives Into Fort Greene & Downtown Brooklyn

Accessible during Open House New York: the future Brooklyn Health Center at 620 Fulton Street, which is being built for the New York Hotel Trades Council. The Council is NYC’s “largest direct provider…of health benefits to union membership, retirees and dependents.” Designed by Francis Cauffman, the 165,000 square foot, 12-story mixed-use building will also include offices, retail space and public amenities. Are there buildings in Fort Greene that you have always wanted to visit?

This year’s Open House New York Weekend is October 15th and 16th, and will feature hundreds of buildings and other interesting sites across the five boroughs, many of which the public cannot normally enter.

The goal of the annual event, says non-profit Open House New York, is to “unlock the doors of New York’s most important buildings, offering an extraordinary opportunity to experience the city and meet the people who design, build, and preserve New York.”

The event seeks to “deepen… our understanding of the importance of architecture and urban design to foster a more vibrant civic life, and helps catalyze a citywide conversation about how to build a better New York.”

There will also be tours, talks, performances, and other special events taking place throughout the weekend.

Below, we’ve noted the sites in Fort Greene and downtown Brooklyn that will be open for the weekend — ranging from historic monuments like the Prison Ship Martyrs Memorial in Fort Greene Park to the Kings County Distillery in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

We encourage you to go exploring all over the city. The majority of sites across the five boroughs are “Open Access” and can be visited for free during the days and hours listed, says OHNY.

Some sites require advanced reservations and we’ve noted that below. Reservations will open tomorrow (10/6) at 11am.

***Make sure you check the OHNY website before you depart for a particular site to make sure that the visiting hours have not changed.
