On The Street: Saturday’s Bangladesh New Year’s Festivities

Neighbors of all ages came out to celebrate the Bangladesh New Year at events at PS 230 and Dome Playground.

Annie Ferdous, Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts director, center, banging the drum as the parade on Saturday neared Dome Playground.

The parade’s tiger and owl masks at the Dome Playground stage.

At the Alpona pattern workshop, artist Melissa Marino quickly outlined a vine in orange paint for each set of kids to work on.

In no time the kids were adding dabs, dots, and dashes of paint to the basic design, like jazz musicians embroidering on a theme.

An hour later, the kids–middle school students from Montauk and another group of young kids–had turned out 2 handsome murals. This paint workshop appeared to be a first at Dome. Several parents interrupted their Sabbath to check it out.
