Old Coal Oven Found in Wheated’s Basement

Old Coal Oven Found in Wheated’s Basement

As they do work on the Church Ave shop that will become the pizzeria/cocktail spot Wheated, a couple of interesting bits of history have been uncovered. First was a tin ceiling, a fairly standard discovery in the area. But then, in the basement, David came across this “real deal, coal fired baker’s oven.”

From Wheated’s Facebook page:

Chances are there was pizza made here before. The oven is huge and extends under the backyard. 14.5 feet deep and a little less width. As a pizza geek, this is an incredible find. The oven is marked “T. Dumbledton & Sons Oven Builders, 619 Carlton Ave. Brooklyn NY”. A Google search turned up an obituary for one Thomas Dumbleton from 1920.

Sadly, it’s not in any shape to find a new life cooking pizzas at Wheated, but they’re going to try to preserve it in some way.
