Old Carriage Inn Seized For Nonpayment Of Taxes
One of the last (dare we say “dive”?) bars in the neighborhood where you can get a cheap beer and watch a game and it’s unlikely you’ll ever trip over a stroller, 7th Avenue’s Old Carriage Inn has been closed for non-payment of taxes.
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance shuttered the bar, located at 312 7th Avenue, on the corner of 8th Street, yesterday, January 7, and while we’ve seen a few places in the neighborhood bounce back after such a closure, we can’t help but be a little concerned about the Old Carriage Inn after hearing the amount the state says they owe — according to the tax department, they’re in debt for back sales tax in excess of $100,000.
“We can’t lose both Jackie’s Fifth Amendment AND the [Old Carriage Inn]!!” tipster David Hyatt told us, basically saying exactly what we’re all thinking, referring to the recent demise of another longtime neighborhood bar.
The Old Carriage Inn opened on this corner in 1982, originally serving up food as well before closing the kitchen to offer more seating. From the Superbowl to karaoke nights, it’s definitely a neighborhood staple, and we’re hoping this isn’t the last we’ve heard from them.
