October Is Adopt A Dog Month!
If you’ve been considering adding a furry new member to your family, next month is the time to do it! October is Adopt a Dog Month, and Brooklyn offers plenty of resources to make your doggie dreams a reality. Adopting a dog instead of buying from a breeder is a great way to save NYC animals who might otherwise be euthanized–and adopting a mixed breed dog may help you avoid health problems often found in purebreds.
There are a number of rescue organizations in and around Brooklyn with pups looking for loving homes. While some have a central location, many rely on a network of dedicated foster pet parents–so you could stop by a shelter like BARC (253 Wythe Avenue at N 1st Street; off the G at Metropolitan Avenue) or Sean Casey Animal Rescue (153 E 3rd Street between Caton Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway; off the G at Fort Hamilton Parkway); or you could search local pets online, and get in touch with an organization like Tails of Love (where you can find the lovely Libby, pictured above in her foster home) to arrange a meeting.
Once you find your new best friend, you can stop by local vet Heart of Brooklyn (775 Fulton Street between South Oxford Street and South Portland Avenue) for a free exam, valued at $62.50. Simply mention their promotion when scheduling your appointment at 718-855-7387, then bring shelter/rescue paperwork showing your dog’s medical history and an adoption date within the last 30 days–and Heart of Brooklyn will be happy to help you and your adopted pet continue on the road towards health and happiness.
Find nearby shelters and rescues here, or search adoptable dogs by distance here–and we hope to see you and your new pup around town!
