Nostrand Avenue Radio Shack Is Among Thousands To Be Closed

As part of their bankruptcy proceedings, Radio Shack will close at least 1,784 stores by March 31 — including 14 in Brooklyn, among which are ones in Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach, Bensonhurst and Midwood.

Specifically, the Radio Shacks at 3764 Nostrand Avenue (at Avenue Y) and 6719 18th Avenue (at 68th Street) are slated to close by Saturday, February 28 as part of the second wave of shut-downs.

The third wave will see closures by Tuesday, March 31. This wave includes the Shacks at 505 Brighton Beach Avenue, 2041 86th Street, and 1616 Kings Highway (by the Q station at East 17th Street).

Overall, 162 stores nationwide have already closed as of this past Tuesday, February 17, and the second wave will shutter 986 stores, while the third/final wave will shutter 636 stores.

Radio Shack filed for bankruptcy on February 5 as part of its deal with hedge fund Standard General to sell them up to 2,400 of their stores, while closing thousands more.

According to Business Insider, of those stores sold to new ownership,

Standard General’s affiliate, General Wellness, has also reached an agreement with Sprint to, “establish a new dedicated mobility ‘store within a store’ retail presence in up to 1,750 of the acquired stores.”
