New Shop on Newkirk Plaza
Workers were installing this awning over 37 Newkirk Plaza today. They said they didn’t know when it would be opening, but here’s what we do know. This is the space that used to be Golden Krust, which shut down a few months ago (possibly because they found it hard to compete with Fisherman’s Cove across the way?).
All we can go by is the awning for the moment, but based on that, this feels like another case of “it’s better than nothing.” Because does this area really need another place for fruits and vegetables? Besides the couple of stores where you can pick up a thing or two on the Plaza already, there are two fruit carts at either end of the Plaza these days, plus C-Town on East 16th Street, Key Food on Foster, and Kim’s Market on Newkirk Ave.
So while it’s better to have something open than an empty storefront, and I’m looking forward to seeing the new space, hopefully they can bring something that we don’t already have plenty of.
