M.S. 839, the new middle school being built at the corner of E. 7th Street and Caton Avenue, is now recruiting its founding teachers for the 2015-16 school year, the principal, Michael Perlberg, let us know.

Open positions include teachers, secretaries, guidance counselors, social workers, and more. Candidates who are interested in applying should submit an application by going here.

The principal said they’re looking for candidates who:

  • Love working with middle schoolers
  • Dedicate themselves to advising a small group of students, with a focus on building growth mindsets, infusing social-emotional learning, implementing restorative practices, and connecting families to their child’s learning.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to build authentic interdisciplinary units of study that culminate in exceptional student work products.
  • Commit to creating a student centered environment
where all students are seen, heard, and valued

.

  • Have passions outside the classroom and be eager to share their interests with children, families and colleagues.

For the first year, M.S. 839 will house just sixth grade students, but ultimately will include pupils in sixth through eighth grades, with about 100 students in each grade. The school has already attracted quite a bit of attention, and 637 applicants from more than 25 different elementary schools across School District 15 applied to fill the 100 seats that will open next school year, M.S. 839 wrote yesterday on its Facebook page
