A free, interactive music series begins tonight at Bar Chord (1008 Cortelyou Road), and musicians of all kinds are invited to drop in and play, and everyone is of course welcome to just hang out and listen. The Free Standards series, curated by Nicolas Letman-Burtinovic, is coming up every other Wednesday through the end of July at 9pm, and each night will run like so:

1. A group composed of different NYC scenes will perform a set of original music based on a theme or a composer (for example, an Elvis set, a Monk set, an original NYC bands set, and so on).

2. The jam will open, and anyone of any style or instrument can play a standard, a free piece, or something in between.

3. The house band will close the night, with guests from the jam, by playing a piece or two.

Tonight it’s “jazz-punk” with guests Yoni Kretzmer on saxophones, Travis Reuter on guitar, Nicholas on bass, and a drummer to be announced.

The event on July 10 will cover “rare Monk,” and will feature Michaël Attias and Igal Foni. Stay tuned for more on the July 24 event.
