New ‘Friends Of The End’ Group Cleans Up Albemarle Road, Plans To Keep Beautifying Our Neighborhood

If you’ve walked past the dead end where the subway tracks cut through Albemarle Road recently, you’ve probably noticed how much nicer it’s looking these days — which is thanks to a new group of neighbors who just formed the “Friends of the End.”

About two dozen of our neighbors who live near E. 17th Street and Albemarle Road just joined forces to form the group, and they got together for the first time about a week ago to spend several hours cleaning up the raggedy dead end. They hacked out the remains of a mulberry tree and its sprawling roots, clipped the remnants of dozens of little plastic bags that had been tied onto the fence, swept up tons of glass and litter, and then power-washed the whole corner, transforming the space into a place we can all be proud of!

Plus, while tackling the area with trash bags and brooms, the neighbors also brought chalk, bubbles, music and lemonade to please the small trainspotters among them.

To help keep the area looking pretty, new signs have been placed there to remind neighbors “clean the end” and that the dead end is a space where our community’s kids should be able to play, not a place for dropping garbage, leaving dog poop and parking cars.

The Friends of the End told us they’re going to keep being awesome and will continue their efforts to clean the area, as well as work on plans to further beautify the area.

Many thanks to our neighbors for all of their hard work!
