New Biz: Bathhouses, Famed Antique Store, The Garden Closure, and More

Present Bodies: Papermaking at Dieu Donné

A Brooklyn exhibition will embrace the medium of paper. Opening at BRIC on December 5,  they will feature the works of eight artists who explore the transformative capabilities of papermaking: Swoon, Noel W. Anderson, Candy Gonzalez, Lesley Dill, Lina Puerta, and more. Some of the artists are previous participants of Dieu Donné’s Workspace Residency,  a leading non-profit cultural institution dedicated to serving established and emerging artists through the collaborative creation of contemporary art using the process of hand papermaking.

City Foundry Antique Store @ Industry City

City Foundry will bring it’s second store for one-of-a kind, vintage, design wares to Brooklyn’s Industry City. Established in 2000 by Sohrab Bakhshi, City Foundry quickly became a pillar of Brooklyn design and a recognized source for architects, stylists and designers looking for an impeccably curated selection of 20th century furniture, lighting, art and artifacts presented in an unconventional manner.

The shop will also provide expert custom upholstery and furniture restoration and sell City Foundry’s own custom collection, CF Signature, which features limited-edition, industrial and mid-century modern influenced tables, lighting, seating, and mirrors.

Old Man Hustle Comedy Club & Bar

What used to be Videology, a movie screening bar in Williamsburg, has now re-invented itself as a comedy club. Old Man Hustle Comedy Bar opened its second and much larger location from owner and comedian, Edward Farrell.

The club, with the entrance located on South 1st street offers showcases seven days a week with comedians promised from Comedy Central, Netflix, MTV and HBO. One drink minimum at shows.

HotBox Mobile Sauna

NYC’s only sauna on wheels is now parked in Bushwick for their temporary residency through January! The wooden sauna heats up to a toasty 180 degrees that will get you sweating. Enjoy their portable ice shower to cool off outdoors, plus they have a tent set up for lounging, and a mini bar with an assortment of teas, kombucha, and other beverages. Stay hydrated! Bathhouse

Williamsburg now has it’s own Bathhouse (not on wheels) situated in a renovated 1930s soda factory. The spa (and restaurant) offers many treatments from massages to sensory deprivation tanks. Enjoy both dry and tropical saunas, a starlight steam room, three thermal pools, heated marble hammams, and cryotherapy.

Closings

The Garden

The Garden, a family-owned food market was on the corner of Kent Street and Manhattan Avenue was a Greenpoint staple for 25 years. They closed its doors to permanently Sunday after Thanksgiving. Owner Marius Tapper told News12 that the growth of online shopping and chain grocery stores has had a big impact on their business, resulting in a major loss of sales.
