Neighbors In The News: Nate Meshberg Of Ft. Greene Farms

Recently, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce announced it would be starting a “Brooklyn Made” certification program to lend authenticity to borough-based products amid a boom of outside companies wanting to associate themselves with Kings County. A new article in the Wall Street Journal titled Breaking Into New York’s Food Shops, however, says a Brooklyn base isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Enter neighbor Nate Meshberg of Ft. Greene Farms, a small-batch condiment maker who’s been successful getting out-of-state stores to stock his sriracha, mustard, and more–but has found getting Brooklyn and Manhattan establishments to do so a bit tougher. It seems while spots in Northampton, MA and Falls Church, VA (“Brooklynesque” places, he explained to Bedford + Bowery last month) are hungry for some of that Brooklyn cachet, the market here at home may be a bit too saturated.

Nate currently works out of Long Island City, but Beford + Bowery says he is hoping to move his operation closer to Fort Greene within a year. For now, you can check out Ft. Greene Farms’ relish, granola, and other products here.
