Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Area Fundraising Projects
If you’ve been trying to find a worthwhile project to support, look no further than some of the schools right here in our own neighborhood.
Clay For Elementary School Art Classes
School: P.S. 10 (511 7th Avenue, between Prospect Avenue and 17th Street)
Project: Ms. Fontana at P.S. 10 would love to offer her first through fifth grade students lessons in pottery, but needs clay for the weekly classes. “Students will be able to create hands-on clay pottery inspired by traditional techniques such as creating a pinch pot, coil pot, and slab box,” she said on her Donors Choose page. Students will learn that pottery has a rich history all over the world including Mexico, Japan, and Africa.”
Goal: $495.07
Larger Rug For 1st Grade Classroom
School: P.S. 295 (330 18th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenue)
Project: Ms. Phillips at P.S. 295 says that the rug in her 1st grade classroom is too small to fit all 29 of her students, causing a number of difficulties during lessons. “Receiving a new rug will make everyone feel comfortable and included in all lessons because we will no longer need kids to sit off the rug,” she said. “The added area of the rug will increase the personal space for each student, putting the focus on the lesson instead of who is crowding another student.”
Goal: $469.00
Books For 7th Grade Classroom
School: Peter Rouget/Middle School 88 (544 7th Avenue, between 18th and 19th Street)
Project: There is nothing like getting lost in a book, and Peter Rouget teacher Ms. Schildkraut is hoping to instill a love for reading in her 7th grade students by stocking her classroom with books the kids can relate to. “For some of our students, their reading lives exist mostly in the classroom,” she wrote on her Donors Choose page. “When those students come to see that there is joy in reading with others, in sharing stories and ideas, and in feeling close to characters, they may go ahead and look for that joy outside of school.”
Goal: $483.01
