Neighbors Angered Over Kestrel Stencils Illegally Placed All Over Windsor Terrace & Kensington

The Kestrel (33 Caton Place) apparently decided that they wanted to advertise their apartment building that includes two-bedroom units for nearly $4,000 by stenciling logos all over Windsor Terrace and Kensington – which seems to have backfired, as everyone we’ve spoken to is pretty ticked off about it.

The stencils, which are illegal, have shown up throughout the neighborhood – including three in front of the Windsor Terrace library, neighbor Sherry Davis told us. We also noticed them on the sidewalk at Caton Avenue, near the northbound Ocean Parkway service road, and on Prospect Avenue near Reeve Place.

“My feeling is, The Kestrel was already not a big hit in the existing community, and [the stencils] will not, and maybe were not designed to, win them new fans,” Sherry told us.

Councilman Brad Lander’s office told us that they’ve received one complaint about it so far. The lawmaker’s office also noted that this ad campaign is not legal and that The Kestrel could be slapped with a fine from the city Department of Transportation.

Sherry also mentioned that she spoke to Raymond, from Little Tonino’s (424 Greenwood Avenue), who noted that the stencils were placed in front of his 9/11 memorial on East 5th Street. After he called The Kestrel to complain, he was told that someone would come to remove it on Saturday.

For those who want the ads removed, you can reach The Kestrel at (718) 878-1833 or the ad agency at (917) 470-0656.

Numerous other neighbors took to Facebook to air their anger over the new ad campaign, with one resident saying she saw this response to the stencil:

The Kestrel recently started renting apartments in its eight-story, 126-unit building, as reported by Brownstoner, and the units are going from $2,215 for a one bedroom/one bathroom place to $3,900 for a two bedroom/two bathroom abode. The least expensive apartments in the building are expected to go for about $1,660.

According to the Kestrel’s website, the building will include a 24-hour attended lobby, a gym with space for private exercise classes, an on-site garage, a pet spa, bike storage, a media room, a yoga room, and a children’s playroom. Most of the residences (studios to three-bedrooms) will have private outdoor terraces, and there will be a landscaped rooftop with grilling areas and private cabanas.

We’ve reached out to The Kestrel for comment and will update if they get back to us.
