Neighbor Says She Was Attacked Early Monday Morning

A female neighbor wrote in to tell us she was attacked near the intersection of Westminster and Beverley Roads at about 1am on Monday morning:

I was walking back from my car to my apartment, when out of the corner of my eye I saw a very tall and heavy-set black male behind me at about a car length away. I sped up my walk because I felt that he might be following me, and shortly after he approached me from behind, covered my mouth and said “shut up, don’t say anything.”
He crouched down over me and I was in a crouching position, and I managed to elbow him off of me from behind. I then started screaming and hitting him with my keys on his head. He backed off (I think because I was screaming so loud) and I made sure he was far enough away from me and I started sprinting towards Cortelyou.

She describes the man as very heavyset, over 6 feet tall and having little hair on his head.

Thankfully, our neighbor ended up okay. She ran to the Superior Late Night Deli where she says the men on duty were amazing. “They gave me water and called the cops and completely made me feel better.”

She did want to add that neighbors be as cautious as possible when walking around the neighborhood.

“I have lived in this neighborhood for over a year now, and have never felt unsafe, but it just goes to show, that even in the safest neighborhood, when it’s dark and you are alone, you are putting yourself in danger,” she said. “I feel so lucky that I was able to fight back and get away completely unscathed, but I want to share this with as many people as possible to prevent things like this from happening.”
