Neighbor Jen Hillman Brings New Exhibition To Supercollider
Printmaker, art teacher, and happily married lover of eggs, Jen Hillman, moved to South Slope six years ago, and fell hard for the neighborhood’s charms.
“I love this place,” she recently told us, “and often say or think it at least 400 times a week.”
We feel the same way!
If you’re looking to explore some new works this weekend, don’t miss Jen’s exhibition, which she says is “colorful and eclectic,” and sure to make you “happy and thirsty,” running at Supercollider (609 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Street) from December 6 through January 5.
SSN: How did you discover printmaking?
JH: I took my first class in my senior year in college and loved it. I wanted my thesis to be silk screened so I had to learn quickly. When I graduated, I was accepted into the apprentice program at The Fabric Workshop & Museum, and that sold me.
Do you have a favorite piece?
Printing can be unpredictable at times, even if you plan every detail. “Mermaid” is my favorite piece because it turned out exactly the way I had planned, and that is a rarity for me.
Who inspires you as an artist?
Most recently I’ve been inspired by people in high stress situations. I have a lot of artist friends and family and they have influenced my creativity; their work ethic makes me work harder.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
My mom said it best. “Wear comfortable shoes,” and I do.
