National Grid Construction Work To Impact Several More Local Streets In The Coming Weeks

Many neighbors have asked us about these large wooden barricades that recently went up around trees on several local streets — turns out they’re a protective measure for a bunch of upcoming construction work in the neighborhood.

Community Board 6 let us know that these were installed ahead of upgrades by National Grid to their outdated and undersized equipment, work which is already underway and will continue around the Slope and Gowanus. The goal of the project is to update the system, so service in the area remains reliable in the future.

As you’ve probably already seen, and should get used to for a little while at least, the work usually requires excavation of the street or sidewalk, and while it’s often backfilled at the end of each day, there are often steel plates installed to cover any excavations left open. They say concrete openings should be restored within 21 days (though work done over the winter may have required more time due to the inclement weather).

The work may also require National Grid to access service in homes, at which point one of their representatives would contact you to make an appointment.

Here are the streets that are included in the project, in various stages:

4th Street between 4th Avenue and Prospect Park West
5th Street between 5th and 7th Avenues
6th Street between 3rd Avenue and Prospect Park West
7th Avenue between 3rd and 9th Streets
10th Street between 2nd Avenue and Prospect Park West
