Martin Luther King Day 2019 Celebrations In Brooklyn
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have turned 90 on January 15. Various local organizations will celebrate MLK Day on Monday, January 21 with events including readings, movie screenings, musical performances, volunteering, and more.
Commemorate the legacy of Dr. King at these events happening throughout Brooklyn.
Brooklyn Music School’s Annual MLK Tribute Concert
When: Saturday, January 19, 5pm to 6pm
Where: Brooklyn Music School, 126 Saint Felix Street, Fort Greene
What: Join Brooklyn Music School for this annual tribute concert in which Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and impact are honored through song and storytelling.
How Much: Tickets $5 in advance, $8 at door
Annual MLK Interfaith Prayer Service
When: Sunday, January 20 at 3pm
Where: Old First Church, 729 Carroll Street (at 7th Avenue), Park Slope
What: Co-sponsored with Assembly Member Robert Carroll, Congregations Kolot Chayeinu and Beth Elohim, All Souls Bethlehem and other churches and choirs, all are invited to this special service of music and prayer.
MLK Day Of Service
When: Monday, January 21, 9am to 12pm
Where: Kaiser Park, Bayview Avenue & W 33rd Street, Coney Island
What: MLK Day is a nationally-observed day of service in which people come together to volunteer and improve their communities. Join NYC Parks Stewardship and volunteers in making Kaiser Park greener, cleaner, and healthier for all. Wear warm layers, durable boots or sneakers, and clothes that can get dirty. MLK Day at BCM – I Have a Dream Celebration
When: Monday, January 21, 10am to 5pm
Where: Brooklyn Children’s Museum, 145 Brooklyn Avenue (at St. Marks Avenue), Crown Heights
What: The Brooklyn Children’s Museum honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with programs and workshops exploring themes of diversity, equality, freedom, and resistance.

33rd Annual Brooklyn Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
When: Monday, January 21, 10:30am
Where: Brooklyn Academy of Music, Howard Gilman Opera House, 30 Lafayette Avenue, Fort Greene
What: Presented by BAM, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, and Medgar Evers College, this is NYC’s largest public celebration honoring Dr. King. The free event brings world-renowned activists, public figures, and civic leaders together with musicians and other performers to pay tribute to King’s legacy and keep his message alive. This year, BAM welcomes keynote speaker, civil rights activist and “Me Too” founder Tarana Burke as well as musical performances by Oddisee and The Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir.
How much: Free. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-seated basis. Lobby doors open at 8am.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day Storytelling & Music Event
When: Monday, January 21, 11am to 3pm
Where: Grace Reformed Church of Flatbush, 1800 Bedford Avenue (between Lincoln Road & Lefferts Avenue), Prospect-Lefferts Gardens
What: Launched in 2011, this volunteer-run celebration includes high schoolers as well as students from Medgar Evers College and LIU Brooklyn and fosters literacy and awareness of the Civil Rights Movement among P-LG youth and families. This year’s event will feature Brooklyn author Jacqueline Woodson reading from her book Show Way, a story about the Underground Railroad; Kiddie Science activities; drummer Andrew Drury; and more. Lunch, performances, and activities are free and open to the public.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Free Community Day
When: Monday, January 21, 11:30am
Where: Stuart Cinema & Cafe, 79 West Street (between Milton Street & Greenpoint Avenue), Greenpoint
What: Stuart Cinema & Cafe’s monthly community day will honor Dr. King with games for the kids and free screenings of Selma (6pm) and Malcolm X (8pm) for all.

Families Celebrate Africa – A Martin Luther King Jr Day Event
When: Monday, January 21, 3pm to 5pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West (at 2nd Street), Park Slope
What: The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture hosts a fun-filled family event to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr, featuring African music, drumming, and dance, face painting, African crafts and activities, stories, food, and costumes. Proceeds from this event will help provide scholarships for BSEC’s Ethics for Children Classes as well as help with the Society’s campaign for an accessibility ramp.
How much: Tickets $5 to $20, free for children 2 and younger
