Memorial Tournament Brings Championship Tennis to Fort Greene Park
The Fort Greene Tennis Association is gearing up for its 5th annual Addison Steadman Memorial Singles Championships, which will take place the next two weekends on the recently refurbished tennis courts of Fort Greene Park. And for those of you interested in playing, there’s still time to get a spot in the tourney, happening between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. July 20 through 21 and July 27 through 28.
“The event is open to anyone who wants to play, although there are some very strong players in the tournament,” Fort Greene Tennis Association President Michael Brownstein said. “It was started five years ago by neighborhood tennis players, both as an effort to raise money to repair and maintain the courts, and as a fun community event.”
In early June the Fort Greene tennis courts reopened following a month-long resurfacing project that filled in the cracks and fissures that developed over decades of use. The repairs cost around $60,000, The Nabe previously reported, and were almost completely funded by local tennis players.
Your tournament application costs $20 to enter and must be received by July 17. Spectators and additional donations for future repairs and maintenance are also welcome.
