Meat Barn Closes To Make Way For Brooklyn College School Of Business
We don’t get down to the neighborhood much these days, but it’s a sad time for produce in Midwood. According to the Daily News, the Meat Barn and Northeastern Produce Market on Nostrand Avenue that was bought out to accommodate the Brooklyn College expansion has closed its doors.
The market has a bit of a colorful history, having been opened in 1975 by Paul Castellano, the Gambino crime family boss who John Gotti had killed ten years later. Castellano set up the market and various other businesses to make sure his kids were supported without having to get involved with the mafia.
The property, which sold to the Brooklyn College Foundation for $5.85 million, will make way for the college’s School of Business. No date has been set to begin construction on the lot, but a BC spokeswoman says the building to be erected will likely include ground floor retail space and dorm rooms above.
