Community members are invited to attend a meeting on a massive tower planned at the current site of the Trump Village Shopping Center tomorrow, January 21.

The discussion, which is expected to address environmental contamination found at the site among other concerns, will take place at Abraham Lincoln High School, 2800 Ocean Parkway, from 7pm to 9pm.

The 40-story building (to be located at 520 Neptune Avenue) would be so gargantuan, it will likely be visible from Sheepshead Bay. Last year, Bensonhurst Bean reported that Chinese developers were planning to build a 24-story condo building on the site of an abandoned Cropsey Avenue nursing home. Around the same time, a 30-story building was proposed for Voorhies Avenue in Sheepshead Bay. This latest development, spearheaded by Cammeby’s International Group, would dwarf those projects.

The site of the shopping center was once home to the Dangman Park Manufactured Gas Plant, and an environmental consulting firm has found the soil to be seriously contaminated with chemicals like cyanide and mercury, reports Brooklyn Daily. Community leaders are concerned that destruction of the mall would cause pollutants to seep into the area’s drinking water, posing health risks to its mostly senior population.

Tomorrow’s meeting will be opened by members of the Department of Environmental Conservation, followed by a presentation from the developers, and concluded with a Q & A session with both the environmentalists and the developers.

Transportation to the meeting will be available from Trump, Warbasse, Luna Park, and Brightwater Towers from the following pick-up locations:

  • 2942 West 5th Street
  • 2935 West 5th Street
  • 445 Neptune Avenue

  • Corner of Seabreeze Avenue & West 5th Street
