Local Cops Warn Of Robbery Trend Targeting Youths Leaving School

The Crime Prevention Unit of the NYPD’s 61st Precinct issued an alert to neighbors last week warning of a rash of muggings targeting teens and kids on their way home from school.

According to cops, the robberies usually begin when one to two male black perpetrators in their late teens to early 20s come up behind the victim and surround him or her. In several instances, they told their victim “run your pockets” or “empty your pockets,” and then take the victim’s properties.

The suspects flee on foot.

Police did not say how many incidents have been reported, or where they occurred.

The NYPD is distributing the following tips to help keep neighbors safe:

  • Stay alert at all times, criminals target those who are distracted.
  • Keep your cell phone and electronic devices hidden while walking in the street.
  • Attempt to walk in well-lit and well populated areas.
  • Keep a record of your electronic device serial numbers. This will help the NYPD track down your property if it is ever lost or stolen.
  • Register your devices with NYPD Operation ID.
  • Contact P.O. Vishnevskiy to register your devices at (718) 627-6832.
