CROWN HEIGHTS—A Crown Heights community board was on Tuesday again unable to fill its district manager position—a spot that has been vacant for more than three years.

At Brooklyn Community Board 9’s executive board meeting on the evening of Tuesday, the board counted the votes cast last week for the long-vacant district manager post. A special community board meeting was called for June 11 to vote on the four candidates—Andrew Kunkes, Charles Jackson, Rose DeStefano and Michelle McClymont. Of the 24 people who were there and 18 who submitted a ballot, 13 people voted for a candidate, and the rest submitted ballots but not for any of the candidates.

The special meeting was called after three members of the executive board walked out of the May monthly general board meeting, leaving the board without a quorum, amid accusations of bias against certain candidates throughout the search and interview process.

According to the community board’s rules, a majority of the executive board— in this case 13 votes— would need to be cast for a candidate for them to be awarded the spot. But last week, none of the candidates received 13 votes, the executive board discovered Tuesday evening after counting the votes. One candidate, McClymont, received eight votes, while another, Jackson, got five. The rest were either “No” votes or abstentions.

What’s next?

“We’re going to discuss it at the next board meeting,” Patricia Baker, the community board’s chair, referring to the meeting on Wednesday, June 26, told Bklyner in the community board’s office.

Baker added that it is possible the previous candidates will be considered or that new ones will be.

“With this board,” she said, “I can never predict.”
