Living On The Edge: Corner Car Accidents
We spotted this squashed sign and dented fence on the corner of Foster Ave. and Westminster Rd. on the way to –wait for it– the traffic calming meeting last night. The same property was hit last October, albeit in a different spot on the fence, with other recent unlucky corners including Ave. H and Westminster, Argyle and Glenwood, and Ditmas and E 17th St.
This map from CrashStat shows that several of the intersections on Cortelyou as well as Foster are relative hotspots for accidents involving pedestrians, and we can only imagine how many more accidents at those corners happen without people on the street.
When we first pulled the moving truck up to our block, an SUV turning from Coney Island Ave. had taken out a large part of the fence in front of our building, and we were glad we hadn’t gotten there any earlier–but living away from that corner and on a high floor, it’s hard to tell how many more crashes have happened since we moved in. So we wonder for all of you corner-dwellers, especially those in houses or on a low floor: how has your corner fared in your time here?
