Leske’s Closes South Slope Bakery

Sad new from 5th Avenue this morning. Leske’s Bakery (588 5th Avenue, between 16th Street and Prospect Avenue) has closed its doors.

The longtime Bay Ridge favorite opened to great fanfare in February of this year, but according to a neighbor, posted a sign on the front of the store December 27 that said “due to rising costs they can’t sustain the business there.”

This has been a rough spot for bakeries, with Sweet Treasures closing in January of 2013 after less than one year in business.

Leske’s Twitter page does confirm that the South Slope location is currently closed, and notes that they’re “evaluating” whether or not to reopen.

If this is indeed the end, we’re really going to miss those peanut butter and jelly donuts. Best wishes to the folks behind Leske’s.
