Learn To Belly Dance This Weekend At the East 4th Street Community Garden
No time (or funds!) for exotic travel this summer? Now’s your chance to visit Cairo by way of Brooklyn for no money at all. Join local belly dance performer and instructor Nisreen at a special show and class combo at the East 4th Street Community Garden this Sunday at 4pm. The class and performance are free and open to the public.
For the first half of the program, Nisreen will dazzle the crowd by performing a mini-show that features a variety of Egyptian music, including a classic song, an improvised music style called taqsim baladi, and a drum solo.
For the second portion, she will lead the crowd as they learn fun choreography to a pop song called “El Hantour.”
People participating in the class portion are encouraged to wear something comfortable, such as yoga pants and a tank top; coin scarves will be available to borrow or purchase for $10. You’ll be jingling and shimmying before you know it!
Nisreen’s technique is based on the Egyptian style, and her classes emphasize not only the beauty of the dance but the music and culture of the region that produces it. She performs and teaches in New York and New Jersey and completed teacher training under Tamalyn Dallal and through the Bellyqueen program.
If you can’t make the performance on Sunday, Nisreen is also teaching a Thursday evening class at Alden Moves at 1203 Church Avenue. To learn more, you can visit Nisreen’s website or contact her at nisreendance@gmail.com.
