Latin Kings Members Charged In 2013 Stabbing Near De Blasio’s Home, And Additional Incidents
More than a dozen members of the Latin Kings gang have been indicted on conspiracy and multiple other charges, including involvement in a brutal stabbing that occurred last year right near now-Mayor Bill de Blasio’s 11th Street home.
The incident occurred on Friday, September 27 at about 11:30pm on 6th Avenue between 10th and 12th Streets, during which a group of men ambushed four other men, ranging in ages from 16 to 22, nearly scalping one — who was also stabbed in the back and chest — and stabbing the three others. All the victims survived.
De Blasio, who was campaigning for mayor then and whose home is on 11th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, called the attack “deeply troubling.”
The attackers are members of the Outlaws tribe of the Latin Kings, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, which issued an indictment to 14 defendants for this and a series of other crimes including attempted murder, intimidating a witness, and more.
Based in Bushwick and East New York, the Outlaws allegedly engaged in a conspiracy to murder two other rival members who were deemed to be disrespectful to the Latin Kings, and the organization’s manifesto allegedly permits Latin Kings to use violence on such members, according to the investigation.
“We must protect the community from these senseless acts of bloodshed – which were committed supposedly to enforce the Latin Kings manifesto,” District Attorney Ken Thompson said. “The streets of Brooklyn do not belong to the Latin Kings but to the people of Brooklyn, and our streets are now safer as a result of these arrests.”
Ten of the defendants were arrested Wednesday and four had already been incarcerated, and they were all arraigned yesterday. One was ordered held without bail, and all of the defendants were ordered to return to court on January 19, 2015. If convicted, each defendant faces up to 25 years in prison on the top count.
The Latin Kings also made news a few years ago in our area, when gang members were spending a lot of time at the Washington Park handball courts behind MS 51 near 4th Avenue and 3rd Street, though there were no reports of violence at that time.
