Landmarking Sears, Part 2

Landmarking Sears, Part 2

About this time last year, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held the first public hearing about the Sears Roebuck and Co. store at 2307 Beverley Road. Well, that hearing is being continued tomorrow, March 27. Brownstoner notes that there will not be a vote at the meeting, but a couple of meetings makes it hopeful that this gorgeous building will gain landmark status at some point, and soon.

Sears has been in the neighborhood through a number of changes. Opened in 1932 complete with an appearance by Eleanor Roosevelt, the windows were bricked over in the ’60s reportedly to protect them during the riots, and now Sears itself faces financial troubles–and looking at this particular store’s Yelp reviews, it’s not too popular. I doubt a landmarks designation would help reinvigorate sales, but it would help preserve this building before Sears potentially leaves the location.
